This category is not about specific sizes but is devoted to all types of weaving and related artifacts from Morocco.

Geographically, of all the European rug dealers I am the closest to north Africa and Morocco - in fact, it is so close I can see the Rif mountains during the day and the coastal lights at night. The nearest city to me, Tangier, is only a 35 minute ferry ride and then a 5 minute walk brings me to the Casbah. Its outer walls prohibit cars and towards the centre its ever narrowing alley ways permit only single file shoppers. Smells - mint tea, spices and baking bread - prevail. On Thursdays and Sundays I can buy wool and fresh cheese wrapped in palm leaves from the Berbers. From a "shop" (smaller than a telephone booth) wonderful silks.

MOROCCAN MIDDLE ATLAS ARAB RUG. At the extreme western end of the Middle Atlas range lies the region of the Haouz of Marrakech. Many rugs here are woven by descendents of Arab immigrants, as opposed to the majority Berber population. This piece is from the Rehamna group. MOROCCAN MIDDLE ATLAS BERBER RUG which is a true example of primitive Berber rural tribal weaving. The knotted pile, warps and wefts are all of the most lustrous undyed Berber wool. A tiny amount of henna dye has been applied to a small place in the pile because this is the traditional way in which Berber weavers mark there rugs to show origin and ownership. Reference 2257. MOROCCAN MIDDLE ATLAS BERBER RUG with a rare design consisting of a plain central field knotted with many shades of natural henna. The surrounding borders are knotted in undyed shades of various brown, grey and black wools. It originates from the region of Zaine in the western Middle Atlas mountain range. MOROCCAN MIDDLE ATLAS FLAT WEAVE/KILIM from Berbers in the Marmoucher region. This is an old example with a soft, supple, feel and is in excellent condition. It was probably used as a `handira`or cape. Ref. 2230. Size 214 x 138 cms. Euros 850.

MOROCCAN MIDDLE ATLAS FLAT WEAVE/KILIM. The shape indicates that it was woven as a long decoration for the inside of a Berber tent. The motif of the hand of Fatima has been included in the design as a mixture of respect and superstition. Its long shape indicates that it was probably used as a family sleeping rug. Reference 2172. MOROCCAN BERBER HIGH ATLAS RUG. This rare old piece is from the Berbers in the Djebel Siroua which lies between the High and Anti Atlas. Occasionally it is possible to find rugs with portrayals of animals such as lions, camels, horses and even turtoises and serpents, all of which play a part in Berber mythology.
