Moroccan mysteries, treasures and artifacts

This category is not about specific sizes but is devoted to all types of weaving and related artifacts from Morocco.
Geographically, of all the European rug dealers I am the closest to north Africa and Morocco - in fact, it is so close I can see the Rif mountains during the day and the coastal lights at night. The nearest city to me, Tangier, is only a 35 minute ferry ride and then a 5 minute walk brings me to the Casbah. Its outer walls prohibit cars and towards the centre its ever narrowing alley ways permit only single file shoppers. Smells - mint tea, spices and baking bread - prevail. On Thursdays and Sundays I can buy wool and fresh cheese wrapped in palm leaves from the Berbers. From a "shop" (smaller than a telephone booth) wonderful silks.

MOROCCAN BERBER BAG / PILLOW. The complexity of the designs in the three panels, borders and ends is offset by the simplicity of the reverse side in which the Berber symbol for an eye, which traditionally protects against evil, has been embroidered. It is a good example of the work of the Ait Arfa Berbers in the eastern Middle Atlas. Reference 2100. Size 49 x 35cms. Euros 125.

MOROCCAN BERBER BAG / PILLOW. Reverse of reference 2100.

MOROCCAN BERBER BAG / PILLOW. This is an antique pillow of exceptional fineness which originates from Zaine in the Middle Atlas. It has more Berber motifs than most pieces and they include interpretations of the chess board, snakes, seeds and lions' paws. It is woven in one piece with beautifully embroidered sides on both edges. Reference 2103. Size 38 x 75cms. Euros 325.

Reverse of reference 2103.

MOROCCAN BERBER BAG / PILLOW. Early 20th century, very fine example, from the Middle Atlas region of Zeymour. The Burgundy woollen kilim has been beautifully embroidered with panels of different coloured wools, white cotton and three shades of fine silk. The border work is particularly unusual. It was probably woven as a dowry piece and is in excellent condition. Reference 2104. Size 41 x 81cms. Euros 325.

MOROCCAN BERBER BAGS / PILLOWS. it is most unusual for what was probably the complete set of pillows made by one family to remain together. This group of six is from a Berber tribe in Ziane in the eastern Middle Atlas. They are from the first half of the 20th century and, at first glance, may appear to be the same - but they are not. Across the group there are Berber interpretations of lions' paws, fingers, chess board, scissors and trees and snake and fish skeletons. The white design highlights are of cotton and the colours used include madder, henna and probably curcuma.
