This category is not about specific sizes but is devoted to all types of weaving and related artifacts from Morocco.

Geographically, of all the European rug dealers I am the closest to north Africa and Morocco - in fact, it is so close I can see the Rif mountains during the day and the coastal lights at night. The nearest city to me, Tangier, is only a 35 minute ferry ride and then a 5 minute walk brings me to the Casbah. Its outer walls prohibit cars and towards the centre its ever narrowing alley ways permit only single file shoppers. Smells - mint tea, spices and baking bread - prevail. On Thursdays and Sundays I can buy wool and fresh cheese wrapped in palm leaves from the Berbers. From a "shop" (smaller than a telephone booth) wonderful silks.

Very fine, hand woven capes, such as the one shown opposite, are worn by Berber women at the annual Marriage Festival every September in the village of Imilchil in the eastern Middle Atlas. Unmarried Berber women and girls seeking husbands come from the many surrounding villages, accompanied by their families, for this important event of Moroccan rural society.

MOROCCAN MIDDLE ATLAS BERBER CARPET. Long carpets like this are rolled during the day and often used as communal sleeping blankets at night for the whole family. MOROCCAN HIGH ATLAS CAPE An extremely rare winter cape which consists of a flat weave of undyed black, white and brown goat hair, upon which lines of small flowers are depicted with knots of light red and light blue wool. It originates from the western end of the High Atlas. There is good information on capes, shawls and covers from the High Atlas in "Carpets and Textiles of Morocco" by Pickering and Yohe. MOROCCAN MIDDLE ATLAS BERBER CARPET - When I found this carpet in the High Atlas east of Marrakech it was folded in two, bound on each side and was in use as a giant storage bag. As it was originally a carpet I opened it and returned it to its original form. It is from the region of Boudnib and is the work of the Ait bou Ichaouen Berbers, The piece is essentially a flat weave upon which designs have been hand knotted. A very similar piece is in the Crouzet collection and is shown on plate 32 of "Maroc - Tapis de Tribus". Reference 2261. Size 236 x 150 cms. 7ft. 9ins. X 5ft. Euros 1150.

MOROCCAN BERBER HIGH ATLAS CARPET - Go east from Marrakech, past Azilal and into the foothills of the eastern High Atlas where you will find the Ait Seghrouchen Berber group. It is from here that this beautiful old piece originates. It is in excellent condition and dates from the mid 20th century. MOROCCAN MIDDLE ATLAS BERBER CARPET - A large piece from the Berbers of Beni Ourain and which dates from the first half of the 20th century. It is in excellent condition. The lattice design is explained in "Berber Carpets of Morocco - The Symbols, Origin and Meaning" by Bruno Barbatti. MOROCCAN MIDDLE ATLAS BERBER PILLOW / BAG - although this type of double sided pillow from Zeimour in the western Middle Atlas is fairly common, seriously old, fine examples like this are rare. The workmanship and embroidery on both side is exquisite and there is extensive use of silk on the front face. The text book "Carpets and Textiles of Morocco" by Fiske, Russell-Pickering and Yohe shows similar examples and gives a lot of information from page 108. Ref 2204. Size 97 x 36cms. Euros 445.

MOROCCAN MIDDLE ATLAS BERBER RUG which has a simple field of many subtle shades of madder in which three designs of an ornamental lamp are woven. MOROCCAN BERBER CARPET - south of Marrakech between the High and Anti Atlas Mountain ranges lies the region of Djebel Siroua and it is from the Berber group Ait Ouaouzguite that this magnificent carpet originates. It is among the best I have ever seen. It dates from the early 20th centure and is in outstanding intact condition.
