Moroccan mysteries, treasures and artifacts

This category is not about specific sizes but is devoted to all types of weaving and related artifacts from Morocco.
Geographically, of all the European rug dealers I am the closest to north Africa and Morocco - in fact, it is so close I can see the Rif mountains during the day and the coastal lights at night. The nearest city to me, Tangier, is only a 35 minute ferry ride and then a 5 minute walk brings me to the Casbah. Its outer walls prohibit cars and towards the centre its ever narrowing alley ways permit only single file shoppers. Smells - mint tea, spices and baking bread - prevail. On Thursdays and Sundays I can buy wool and fresh cheese wrapped in palm leaves from the Berbers. From a "shop" (smaller than a telephone booth) wonderful silks.

MOROCCAN TUAREG ARTIFACTS. An interesting old pair of hand carved wooden pots which were used for the storage of kohl - the black make up many Moroccan nomads use around the eyes. MOROCCAN ARTIFACTS. Both Tuareg and Berber communities make these small ceramic bowls which are filled with wax and have a wick inserted and become candles. MOROCCAN COPPER ARTIFACT. A late 19th century hand made small copper pot complete with handle and was probably the work of Jewish craftsmen in Marrakech. See `Splendeurs du Maroc` - Musee Royal de l`Afrique Centrale 1998 page 42. Reference 2043. Size approx.14cms. high.Euros 90.

Sun faded ochres, yellows and blues are typical of houses in the old medinas.

MOROCCAN BERBER MAN'S BELT. This old example is from Berbers in the Djebel Siroua region which lies between the High and Anti Atlas ranges. It dates from the early 20th century and the design is embroidered in yellow silk. The buckle is of a heavy white metal and is probably Moroccan silver. See `Splendeurs du Maroc` - Musee Royal de l`Afrique Centrale 1998 pages 236 and 240. Reference 2064. Size 90cms. long. Euros 90.

MOROCCAN ARTIFACTS. These bowls with lids were used for the storage of henna by Berber women from the south of Morocco. They are made from very fine leather of the inside of a camel leg which is formed and then dried to a rigid structure. The same process is used to make the tight fitting conical lid. Berber designs are then painted on. References 2034, 2035 and 2036. Sizes 11cms., 13cms. and 12cms. high. Euros 55 each.

MOROCCAN ARTIFACT. Little is wasted in rural Berber society and a suitably shaped gourd which has been hollowed out for its food content is then dried and coloured and used as a bowl for milk and other liquids. It dates from the first half of the 20th century and from the region of Djebel Siroua. Reference 2059. Size 11cms. high, 25cms. across. Euros 45.

MOROCCAN BERBER MIDDLE ATLAS WEAVING TOOLS - This pair of hand carved wooden spindles would have been used by a Berber woman to hand spin wool after it had been carded. They date probably from the early 20th century and the shaft of one has hand carved Berber motifs. Fascinating artifacts from a bygone era.
