Moroccan mysteries, treasures and artifacts

This category is not about specific sizes but is devoted to all types of weaving and related artifacts from Morocco.
Geographically, of all the European rug dealers I am the closest to north Africa and Morocco - in fact, it is so close I can see the Rif mountains during the day and the coastal lights at night. The nearest city to me, Tangier, is only a 35 minute ferry ride and then a 5 minute walk brings me to the Casbah. Its outer walls prohibit cars and towards the centre its ever narrowing alley ways permit only single file shoppers. Smells - mint tea, spices and baking bread - prevail. On Thursdays and Sundays I can buy wool and fresh cheese wrapped in palm leaves from the Berbers. From a "shop" (smaller than a telephone booth) wonderful silks.

MOROCCAN HIGH ATLAS BERBER RUG from the region of Azilal. An old example in excellent condition where the weaver clearly changed her mind about the design and colours as she progressed and different materials and dyes became available. The wools are soft and silky. The overall effect is naive and primitive. Reference 2247. Size 190 x 128 cms. / 6ft. 3ins. X 4ft. 3ins.

This is an old example from the Middle Atlas. Reference 2112. Size 246 x 140cms. Euros 925.

MOROCCAN MIDDLE ATLAS BERBER RUG The unique Berber knot is usually chunky and primitive but in this rare rug it is very fine and provides a heavy piece with a glossy wool and lovely sheen. The checkerboard design is sometimes found in rugs from the region of Boujad in the western Middle Atlas, but it is unusual for it to cover the whole field. The text book "Marokko" by Kurt Rainer shows the design in a Boujad rug on plate 108. Reference 2256. Size 126 x 93 cms. 4ft. 2ins. X 3ft. 1ins. Euros 425.

MOROCCAN WOODEN CHEST/ARTIFACT. The making of hand carved, decorated and inlaid wooden chests is a very old Moroccan artisanal skill.
